Quick tip old plastic card makes a cake decorating comb

Decorating a cake for birthdays or any occasion is fun and can be a cheaper alternative to buying one at the store. The key is to not spend too much on cake decorating accessories like icing and decorating tools.

One great trick is to make your own cake-decorating comb by using an old credit, debit gift or store-loyalty card (just make sure it’s one you no longer need). Use the straight side to make smooth edges and cut the other edge of the card with pinking shears or other decorative scissors. If you’re like me, you have strange scissors laying all over the house from previous craft projects.  Wash the card thoroughly with hot soap and water. After you frost your cake, run the comb along the edge to create decorative ridges. This is a great way to add a decorative touch from an item that would otherwise get shredded.

For a simple piping bag, cut a small corner off of a heavy duty plastic freezer bag. Fill the Ziploc with icing towards the cut corner (about a fourth of the bag) and then twist the bag around until the icing is ready to be piped. When you’re done, rinse it out and use it again for next time
